Monday, October 20 – 6 pm
Heritage Presbyterian Church, 1400 East Second Street and Military East in Benicia
Featured as guest speakers will be the five 8th-grade girls from four Benicia-Vallejo area middle schools who each were awarded $900 scholarships to attend Tech Trek 2014, an exciting week-long residential science, technology and math summer camp held last June at Sonoma State University.
The five girls attend four local middle schools. Three of the girls are from Vallejo: Khaylanee De Los Reyes of Mare Island Technical Academy, Alexus Jackson from Hogan Middle and Kelly Poon from Solano Middle School. Jennifer Giron and Amber Iniguez represent Benicia Middle School. The teachers who nominated the campers and their families have also been invited.
All public middle schools were invited to compete. Local math and science teachers from each school nominated students and over 60 applications were submitted. The speakers will discuss a variety of topics such as what it’s like staying away from family for the first time for a week. They will describe what is different about studying in an all-girl program with all-interested students, as well as share their favorite part about camp and what inspires them.
Come join us for another engaging evening showing the tangible results from the branches major fund-raising effort which promotes equity in education for young women. Tech Trek is an excellent example of AAUW in action–improving educational opportunities for girls and having a significant impact on getting more students interested in science and technology careers in our state.
